DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE
Although some companies are required by the Department of Transportation to have a drug-free workplace policy for workers in safety sensitive positions, an increasing number of all employers are choosing to drug test their employees. Such a program can result in a 5% premium reduction for workers compensation coverage. In addition, the employer will see a lower incidence of employee absenteeism or work related illnesses and injuries.
We recommend that you contact your workers compensation insurance carrier for an application for a drug-free workplace premium credit, and call us to help you in establishing a drug free work place.
WHAT IS A MEDICAL REVIEW OFFICER?
The medical review officer is a licensed physician specifically trained to interpret drug test results. The MRO is charged with the responsibility of interpreting results while protecting the confidential nature of an individual’s medical information.
An essential part of the federally mandated drug testing program is the final review of the test results. A positive laboratory test result does not necessarily indicate an individual is an illegal drug user. It is essential, therefore, that a MRO review the results for the possible alternative medical explanation.
The private sector of employers is not required to utilize the services of a Medical Review Officer. However, many are choosing to do so. Having the results reviewed by a MRO can help reduce the employer’s liability as it relates to hiring, firing, and drug screening. It also benefits the employer and good employees from suffering the consequences of erroneous results.
